Free Software Group took birth in 2005 among several students from Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. The main idea behind the group was to promote Free Software to the students and professors from Computer Science faculty and to continue the work started by Igor Știrbu at the end of 2004.
Among the number of all kind of presentations given at the faculty, in summer of 2005, took place first GNU/Linux workshop. More than 20 students attended that workshop, fact that helped in decision of creating the second workshop in 2006.
After most of the students graduated, the interests of the group were extended. This way, in the autumn of 2007 the first Software Freedom Day in Romania was held, at which were invited people from mass-media and different non-governmental organizations. At the beginning of 2008 the first presentation at Babeș-Bolyai University was held, until that moment, all of the events were held at Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.
At the begging of 2008 Free Software Group together with Fortech SRL and FRCCF started a project which led to the result that children from communication center of FRCCF are using now powerful computers which run Free Software operating system and applications in Romanian language.
From the begging of it’s activities, Free Software Group was looking to create a local community build by young people that are using and developing Free Software. This is why Free Software Group is also formed by members of CJLUG (Cluj-Napoca Linux Users Group) or KiwiLinux (a Linux distro build by Jani Monoses with support and help of local community).
Among the continuous activities of the group we also did organization of presentations and technical events and talks under the label of TechTalks.
